UKMLA vs PLAB
How is the UKMLA different from the PLAB? First, the PLAB was an assessment that ensured doctors who qualified abroad had the skills and knowledge necessary to practise medicine in the UK. However, UK medical students only needed to enter their second year of the Foundation Programme. This meant there was no standard exam for doctors practising in the UK. Now, all medical students and doctors wishing to practise in the UK will need to pass the UKMLA.
Second, the UKMLA will look slightly different from the PLAB. Both are two-part assessments covering theoretical and practical medical knowledge. Both exams are pass/fail exams (meaning test takers are not ranked against each other). While the PLAB was administered by the GMC, the UKMLA will be administered by the GMC and UK medical schools based on GMC guidelines.
