UKMLA Frequently Asked Questions
What is the UKMLA exam?
The United Kingdom Medical Licensing Assessment (UKMLA® or MLA®) was announced in 2015 by the General Medical Council (GMC®) as a new standard test to determine whether doctors who wished to work in the UK were fit to practise. It replaces the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) exam. According to Terence Stephenson, chair of the GMC, the MLA is designed to provide a “straightforward and transparent route” to medical practise in the UK and drive up practising standards.
What is the AKT exam?
The applied knowledge test (AKT) is the first half of the two-part UKMLA exam. It’s a computer-based exam consisting of 150 to 200 multiple-choice questions, primarily in single-best-answer format. It will test your ability to apply medical knowledge in different scenarios.
What is the format of the GMC UKMLA exam?
The UKMLA is a two-part assessment that tests the material already covered in UK medical programmes. The first part is the applied knowledge test (AKT), a computer-based test that all UK students and international medical graduates (IMGs) need to take. The second part is the clinical and professional skills assessment (CPSA). For IMGs, the CPSA will be administered at the GMC’s Clinical Assessment Centre in Manchester and remain equivalent to the requirements expected of UK medical schools.
UKMLA vs PLAB
How is the UKMLA different from the PLAB? First, the PLAB was an assessment that ensured doctors who qualified abroad had the skills and knowledge necessary to practise medicine in the UK. However, UK medical students only needed to enter their second year of the Foundation Programme. This meant there was no standard exam for doctors practising in the UK. Now, all medical students and doctors wishing to practise in the UK will need to pass the UKMLA.
Second, the UKMLA will look slightly different from the PLAB. Both are two-part assessments covering theoretical and practical medical knowledge. Both exams are pass/fail exams (meaning test takers are not ranked against each other). While the PLAB was administered by the GMC, the UKMLA will be administered by the GMC and UK medical schools based on GMC guidelines.
When will the MLA replace the PLAB?
The MLA will start for international medical graduates (IMGs) in 2024. UK medical students will need to take the MLA starting with the 2024-2025 graduating class.
Do UK graduates need to sit the MLA exam?
Yes, all UK medical students and international medical graduates (IMGs) are required to pass the MLA exam. This is to ensure all practising doctors in the UK meet the same minimum standard of care.
UKMLA vs USMLE
How is the UKMLA different from the USMLE? Compared to the PLAB, the USMLE was considered a much more difficult exam. As a result, the general consensus is that the USMLE is also more difficult than the UKMLA (which replaced the PLAB). The USMLE features an additional step (three exams compared to the UKMLA’s two) and typically requires students to understand more information to answer each individual question. Some UK medical students will supplement their learning with US materials to bolster their understanding of complex topics. In the US, over 90% of medical students trust UWorld for their USMLE preparation.

What makes the UWorld AKT QBank different from other products?
A major benefit of using the UWorld AKT question bank is that it’s based on UWorld’s USMLE resources. Modified to reflect GMC requirements, our AKT QBank consists of world-class practice questions and rationales. Each answer explanation goes into great detail to explain the overall concept behind the problem and why individual answer choices are right or wrong. Many questions require multiple steps to answer correctly, which our content authors break down in an easy-to-understand way. Students who use our AKT QBank also benefit from data-driven study tools and methodologies that make their preparation more efficient and effective. See for yourself why, since 2003, nearly all medical students in the United States have trusted UWorld to prepare for their licensing exams.
